It is the DeMent's goal to breed long-lived
cows with functional type and solid production. In the past six decades,
they have developed many cows that have won blue ribbons in the show
ring and been recognized for their performance in the milk pail. It is a
master cattle breeder that can breed this type of cattle from a small
herd year after year.
Breeding decisions are made
as a family team. A variety of bulls are used: top JPI bulls; Canadian
bulls; and a few hand-selected bulls from high-production, high-type
dams.

In the junior show,
Janell Baum
exhibited the first place summer yearling (DeMents Jade Rockybell)
and we bred the Reserve Junior Champion (DeMents Minister Gypsy)
exhibited by Ben Sauder and the first place senior two-year-old (DeMents
Counciller Polly) shown by Whitney Anne Springer. |
The DeMents believe it is
important to sample young sires. This led to the formation of R Desirable Genetics,
a partnership organization which samples young sires with
high-type, outcross dams.
The DeMent breeding program
has also proven to be popular with other Jersey breeders, as DeMent-bred animals have
been purchased by breeders across the country. And while the family
likes to sell good cattle, they get even more enjoyment in finding their
cattle do well for their new owners.
The highest-selling cow in
the history of the Illinois Invitational Sale, DeMents Jude Dolly,
Excellent-92%, was purchased in 2001 by Bush River Jerseys, SC, for
$7,100. She went on to become the Supreme Champion of the 2004 Georgia
National and made a record in excess of 19,900 lbs. milk and 1,000 lbs.
fat.
